CIMA Operational Level: Complete Guide to E1, P1 and F1
21 September 2026 · 7 min read
The CIMA Operational Level is the first tier of the CIMA Professional Qualification. It has three subjects — E1, P1 and F1 — each assessed by its own computer-based objective test. This guide explains what each one covers, how they differ, and how to prepare without wasting weeks on the wrong material.
What the three Operational Level exams are
- E1 — Managing Finance in a Digital World. Organisations and their stakeholders, governance, ethics, the finance function and the role of technology. Mostly definitions, frameworks and judgement.
- P1 — Management Accounting. Cost classification, costing methods, budgeting, variances, short-term decisions and basic investment appraisal. Calculation-heavy.
- F1 — Financial Reporting. Recording transactions and preparing financial statements: accruals, depreciation, inventory, receivables and cash flow. Procedural and rule-based.
Which order should you sit them in?
There is no mandatory order, so choose based on your background. If you already do bookkeeping or accounts work, F1 will feel familiar and is a good confidence builder. If you have a business or management background, E1 is often the easiest starting point. P1 tends to punish candidates who are rusty with numbers, so give it a proper runway rather than leaving it for the last week.
Publicly reported pass rates differ between the three subjects, with P1 generally the lowest. We explain where these figures come from, and their limits, on our methodology page. Always check the latest published figures rather than relying on a number from a blog post.
How the objective tests work
Objective tests are taken on a computer and mix several question styles rather than plain multiple choice. You will see single-answer questions, multiple-response questions where every correct option must be chosen, matching and drag-and-drop items, and gap-fill questions. The exact length, question count and pass mark are set by AICPA & CIMA and can change, so confirm them in the official syllabus and exam blueprint before you book.
Why this matters
Multiple-response and matching questions are unforgiving: one wrong selection can cost the whole question. Practise them specifically, not just standard four-option questions.
A study approach that works
- Start with a diagnostic. Before you read anything, attempt exam-style questions cold. It shows which blueprint areas actually need work, so you do not spend hours on topics you already know. Our free 20-question diagnostic does exactly this.
- Learn the concept, then test it immediately. Reading a chapter and feeling you understand it is not the same as answering a tricky question on it.
- Review every wrong answer. Ask why the wrong option was tempting. That reason is usually a repeatable pattern (see our guide to the 7 trap patterns).
- Do a full timed mock. Practise sitting the whole test under time pressure at least once, ideally a week before the exam.
- Revisit weak areas, not comfortable ones. Repeating topics you already score well on feels productive but adds little.
How long should you prepare?
It depends on your starting point and how many hours a week you can commit. Many candidates work through a module in a few weeks of consistent daily practice; calculation-heavy P1 often needs longer for people who have not done numeric work recently. Consistency beats cramming — thirty focused minutes a day outperforms one exhausted weekend.

Frequently asked questions
What are the three CIMA Operational Level exams?
E1 (Managing Finance in a Digital World), P1 (Management Accounting) and F1 (Financial Reporting). Each is a separate objective test.
Which CIMA Operational Level exam should I take first?
There is no compulsory order. Many candidates start with E1 because it is the most conceptual, or with F1 if they already have bookkeeping experience. Pick the one closest to your current work.
Are the Operational Level exams multiple choice only?
No. Objective tests mix several question types, including multiple choice, multiple response, drag and drop, gap fill and matching. Check the current AICPA & CIMA syllabus for the exact format.
